When to call a licensed professional.
- Electrical: any work on the main service panel, the meter, or wiring upstream of the first breaker. Three-phase circuits. Generator inter-tie. Solar PV. Anything where you are not certain of the country’s wire color code.
- Plumbing: gas lines (always). Hot water tank replacement. Main shutoff valve. Anything in a multi-unit building’s common pipework.
- Structural: load-bearing wall changes. Roof structure. Anything that disturbs asbestos or lead paint (likely in any building pre-1985).
- HVAC: refrigerant lines. Combustion appliances.
- Anything you are uncertain about. If you cannot identify the wire color code or the pipe material, stop and call a pro.
Statutory rights preserved.
Local regulation.
Some repairs that are legal to DIY in one country are illegal in another. France requires a Consuel certification for any new electrical installation. The UK requires Part P notification for some electrical works. The USA varies by state and municipality. You are responsible for knowing the rules where you live. Zzair7 cannot list every rule for every jurisdiction.
No liability for outcomes.
